SQM equipment was installed and observations began at Chiba University

SQM has been installed and started observations at the Chiba University Atmospheric Environment Observation Supersite.

The Sky Quality Meter (SQM) is an inexpensive and easy-to-use optical instrument for measuring zenith brightness.

The brightness of the night sky can be observed from the ground due to its nature, and although there is a campaign called “Globe at Night” to estimate the brightness of the night sky from a vast amount of data observed by the naked eye, a network of fixed and constant observation points has not been established in Japan.

The SQM was established at the University of Tokyo as the first site. The first site is equipped with an all-sky camera and LIDAR to determine clouds.

We have now installed the SQM at Chiba University as the second site.

We would like to continue to expand the network of ground-based observation of the night sky brightness.
